Our Kinder students had some special visitors from the Biotechnology Company, Illumina, Inc.
Our students learned about the structure and function of DNA, how to identify traits such as eye color, hair color or right/left handedness and where we can see DNA in the world around us. They also shared what they do in their job and how they got there.
As part of this special day, students participated in a simple but fun, hands-on experiment where they extracted DNA from a strawberry!

First grade had the incredible opportunity to visit the San Diego Air and Space Museum. They were given a once in a lifetime opportunity to be the first people in the new space exhibit, not yet open to the public. The students saw one of the actual Apollo modules that 50 years ago went in space.

After learning about Mars and the rover on Mars, students saw up close an actual rover. They have been reading about Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. They saw equipment that the three astronauts used to carry items back from the moon, the spacesuit the astronauts wore in space and were able to sit inside different space modules. It was amazing seeing several weeks of learning about space come to life.

The students were given a 60th anniversary pin that is made with metal from actual space crafts and modules. The parents were hard at work throughout the entire museum as they navigated the students on a scavenger hunt looking into the past and present technologies of aviation as well. We are so grateful to everyone who made today such a wonderful experience.

Today, Mater Dei Catholic High School and Mater Dei Juan Diego Academy celebrated Ash Wednesday Mass together as one school.

Fr. Claude Lombardo, our chaplain, encouraged the students to grow in faith this Lent by praying more, serving others, and giving up distractions to be more focused on God.

Our President, John Rey, echoed this after Mass when he asked everyone to do one act of kindness each day of Lent for someone else.
